From the secular standpoint, some people may think that money is everything while others may look at it differently -- they believe money is not all-powerful even though sometimes they might find nothing is possible without money. Obviously, money has a high status in man’s heart.
So, what are the attitudes of most Christians towards money?
Since money has such a high status in people’s heart, even Christians, without proper understanding of its value and usage, will easily get lost in this materialistic world or even fall into Satan’s trap.
Hence, the Bible has a lot to say about how to make good use of money and possessions. However, few churches would teach on this topic in detail. Some may try to avoid it; some even feel that it is inappropriate to bring up the subject. Perhaps the reasons behind are: insufficient resources; lack of adequate knowledge of managing money; belief in money being evil and belonged to the material world; or people’s relationship could be undermined because of money issue. Based on some of the above reasons, not many churches will take the initiative to discuss the subject. In fact, it is not an easy task for some churches to educate their congregation on the practice of tithing.
The apostle Paul taught us that money is not evil, but “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:6-10). The Bible tells us that God is the abundant provider of our daily needs. But He also wants us to be diligent workers to earn our wealth. Sometimes, God gives some people the ability to make money and be his financial stewards. Not only does God want them to manage his resources properly, He also wants them to submit to his will and be able to use those resources in the way that best serves his purpose.
During Jesus’ mission on earth, He gave a lot of teachings about money and possessions. The close relationship between effective use of money and one’s spiritual life can better explain why God puts so much emphasis on the importance of having a proper perspective on wealth.
